520 ## - ABSTRACT
Summary, etc. As already noted, most of the examples we use in the book are from our own
observations. They comprise photographs of signs that we have come across
in our travels, notices that we have seen in and around our places of work,
personal correspondence, comments overheard, snippets from newspapers,
publicity materials and other such examples of what we have noticed and found
interesting from a linguistic point of view. All images have been reproduced
in black and white because of the limitations of print, but are available in full
colour on the accompanying website. We have also drawn on conversations
with our students, whose own linguistic observations and experiences have
helped us to see things through fresh eyes. By using such data, typical of
the different kinds of communication that everyone encounters, every day,
wherever they are in the world, we hope to show that doing linguistics is not
just for professional academics, but can also be something that everyone can
engage in.
